The autumn quarter of Lughnasadh is a time of harvest and abundance. It honors the rich health and life force of grain and nut and fruit. The season begins with the feast of Lammas (loaf-mass) which includes the baking of the first loaves of bread made from the new crop. This is the time of year when we also acknowledge the mature mentors who have given of their own life force for the common good.
For autumn florals, I have chosen dahlias from Cashel, the deep orange of Helinium from the walled garden at Wallington, two different sunflowers from the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley, an exquisite fall rose, and tomatoes from the Farmer’s Market in Denver.
The sacred spaces include the Round Tower at Glendalough, Duddo stone circle in Northumberland, the Brownshill Dolmen, Castlerigg in Cumbria, the Old Man of Hoy and the Brough of Birsay from Orkney.
As fall spiritual guides we welcome St Francis (whose feast day is October 4), the open-armed Risen Christ from Duiske (Ireland), Kwan Yin from Lytes Cary in Somerset, a Luohan from the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, a carved angel from the Chalice Well, and St Non – the mother of St David – from Wales. [Please note that the photos below don’t show the whole picture as it appears on the card.]
